AGL Invests Le1 Billion in Scholarships for University Students

By Kadiatu Sankoh Africa Global Logistics (AGL) has reinforced its commitment to community development by awarding scholarships to 51 university students, comprising 25 males and 26 females, from the Seaside and Moa Wharf communities in Freetown for the 2024/2025 academic year. Since the scholarship program’s inception in 2019, a total of 253 students have benefited, with 133 males and 121 females receiving support. This year marks a significant milestone, as AGL has invested over 1 billion Leones into the initiative, the highest number of beneficiaries and funds allocated in a single academic year. The 2024/2025 scholarship beneficiaries received a total of NLe 391,089, directly transferred to their respective university accounts to ensure transparency and efficiency. Adama Njai Year 2 student from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), University of Sierra Leone, shared her story of overcoming financial challenges and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the scholarship. She described it as a lifeline for her education and pledged to use the opportunity wisely to make her community and AGL proud. Maroun Abi Aad, General Manager of AGL, emphasized that the scholarship program is part of the company’s annual corporate social responsibility initiative. He highlighted the importance of investing in education as a means to develop the nation and nurture future leaders. “We are proud of these students and hope to see them shine and contribute positively to society. As long as the company operates, this support will continue with approval from our headquarters,” he stated. Captain Fabjonko Kokan, AGL’s Regional Managing Director, congratulated the students and encouraged them to persevere through challenges. He assured them of AGL’s ongoing support and urged them to seize this opportunity to secure a brighter future. Community Gratitude and Appeal, Alhassan Fofanah, a Year 3 Law student from Fourah Bay College and a beneficiary from the Seaside community, expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the scholarship recipients. He acknowledged AGL’s dedication to the community since 2019 and prayed for the continuity of this life-changing program. Lamin Koroma, Chairman of the Seaside Community, also extended heartfelt appreciation to AGL for its consistent support. He noted the significant impact the scholarship program has had on the community’s educational development. Koroma urged the company to consider expanding its support to include technical and vocational education by establishing a dedicated institute. He also appealed for employment opportunities for past scholarship recipients. Koroma commended AGL for its professionalism in cargo handling and its dedication to efficient operations, effective service delivery, and excellent customer service. He praised the company’s efforts in balancing its business objectives with a positive social impact, particularly in the Seaside and Moa Wharf communities. Africa Global Logistics continues to thrive as a leading port operator in Sierra Leone, not only driving economic growth but also fostering community development through education and other impactful initiatives.
