Alhaji A. Jalloh, the Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Dream Alive Foundation, has been forced into hiding after enduring violent threats, harassment, and a week-long detention in Kambia District. His outspoken advocacy for marginalized individuals, particularly those in same-sex relationships, has sparked severe backlash, leading to his arrest and ongoing threats to his life.
The troubles began in December 2022 when rumors about individuals in same-sex relationships emerged in the district. What was once a hidden aspect of life became a public target, leading to violence, social exclusion, and brutal consequences for those suspected of involvement. As a former farming branch master and a dedicated humanitarian, Jalloh took it upon himself to support these individuals through his organization. His efforts included providing medical assistance, shelter, and advocating for the rights of people in same-sex relationships, with the goal of ensuring they were treated with dignity and respect despite societal prejudice.
However, Jalloh’s advocacy soon made him a target. In one instance, two of his farmworkers were beaten publicly for their suspected involvement in same-sex relationships. Jalloh took them into his home to protect them, but his actions were misinterpreted by the community. He was accused of promoting same-sex marriage, a stance that conflicted deeply with local cultural and religious views.
Local leaders intensified their hostility toward Jalloh, and he was physically assaulted multiple times. Seeking protection, Jalloh turned to local authorities, but his pleas were ignored. Law enforcement, influenced by prevailing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, refused to offer any assistance. The situation escalated on April 16, 2023, when an angry mob stormed his home, assaulting him and threatening his life.
Despite being granted bail after a week-long detention, with the condition that he report regularly to the police, Jalloh continued to face threats and harassment from local residents. The intensity of the situation ultimately forced him to flee the country on May 1, 2023, for his own safety.
Now in hiding, Jalloh’s life remains at risk. Local chiefs and other community leaders have accused him of promoting same-sex relationships, and a warrant for his arrest has reportedly been issued. What began as a mission of humanitarian work has now turned into a fight for survival, with Jalloh facing persecution for his unwavering commitment to equality and human rights.
Jalloh’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by activists advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in regions where such issues are met with hostility. His story underscores the urgent need for greater international attention and support for individuals working to protect marginalized groups. As tensions rise, the global community must take action to support activists like Jalloh, who are risking everything to stand up for human dignity and equality.
