As the traumatic scars from the 10th August, 2022 incidents continue to deeply affect the people and the community, the Sierra Leone Police have taken further steps to address the ongoing fallout from that turbulent day. Recently, authorities visited the residence of Hassan Mansaray, a former police officer whose life was dramatically impacted during the chaos when he was violently attacked by an enraged mob of civilians. The attack was driven by the widespread anger and suspicion that had erupted among the populace after the events of August 10th, which saw widespread unrest, violence, and personal injuries. Fortunately, Hassan Mansaray was able to escape this violent assault, narrowly avoiding what many feared would be mob justice. His escape remains shrouded in mystery, as he managed to flee before the crowd could lynch or physically harm him, and since then, no one has been able to determine his current whereabouts.
The Sierra Leone Police, acting on orders and with the understanding of the sensitive nature of the situation, proceeded to Hassan’s home in an effort to locate and return him to custody with intent to have him hand over the official gun he was assigned with. Their primary concern was the recovery of a firearm that Hassan has been accused of possessing or giving it out to criminals or terrorists specifically, a weapon that he, according to official records, has yet to surrender as mandated by police policy. Upon arrival, the police officers did not find Hassan at his residence, but their presence and actions quickly turned confrontational. Without hesitation, they confronted his family members, his wife, children, and other relatives, demanding that Hassan be produced to them immediately. The officers issued a stern warning that if Hassan was not brought out and the weapon not returned, all members of his family would face arrest and possible detention, irrespective of their involvement or knowledge of his whereabouts.
In the course of enforcing this demand, the police officers resorted to brutal tactics, physically assaulting Hassan’s wife and other family members who were present at the scene. The assault resulted in some members sustaining visible injuries, including bruises and cuts, adding to the tense and tragic situation. The intimidation and violence inflicted upon the family further underscored the tense atmosphere, heightening fears among community residents and raising concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officials in handling such sensitive cases.
Shortly after this forceful confrontation, without any formal explanation or prior notice, the police publicly declared Hassan to be wanted, effectively branding him as a criminal in absentia. This declaration was made suddenly and without the usual legal procedures, further complicating the political and social climate. Since then, all efforts to contact Hassan and give him an opportunity to share his side of the story have been unsuccessful. Despite numerous inquiries and attempts by investigators, his current location remains unknown, and he has not answered calls or responded to messages.
This sequence of events has sparked widespread concern and raised serious questions about the police’s methods and adherence to proper legal procedures during a period of national unrest. The community, human rights organizations, and Hassan’s family are all awaiting clarity and justice. As investigations continue, further details about Hassan’s current situation, his safety, and the legitimacy of the police actions are yet to be fully revealed, underscoring the ongoing complexity and sensitivity of the aftermath of the August 10th incidents.
