He who comes to equity must come with clean hands, “going by this maxim, it is crystal clear that the governing party is edging its way, walking hard to have the opposition party participating in governance. This is a paradoxical approach, because peace cannot omit all the wrongs that were done against the opposition. After the controversial elections results that was nationally and internationally criticized for lack of transparency, coupled with many odds pinned to the political system of intimidation, unlawful detention and killing of opposition members or sympathizers, we are now witnessing a show where the drummers are no longer playing the drums to a tune that will entice the emotions of the dancers to continue dancing.
The people of the republic are confused, as to their faith of prosperity keeps falling apart; The center can no longer hold, the backstage is fragmented with confused ideologies and political formats, which do not seem to be working anymore. Sierra Leone was divided via tribal, regional and political lines before the 2023 elections, and has been further decided amidst the political system of nepotism. For political peace to reign, there has to be a margin of trust and appreciation on the processes, because the incumbent is not trusted and appreciated by the opposition, due to records of political intimidations metted against the oppositions members and sympathizers, ranging from unlawful detention of opposition members and killing of its members or sympathizers. Adversely, before and during the electioneering period, the opposition leader, who contested against the ECSL’s pronounced winner of the ruling party, was severally attacked, supposedly, by members or sympathizers of the incumbent party on diverse occasions, which resulted in unfair and unlawful limitations on the political space and democratic entitlement of the opposition party (APC).Amidst the existing economic crisis, we are witnessing a political crisis of legitimacy that is investing economic deficit in the country, which, to a larger extent, depicting unwanted lives of its people.
The Truth and Reconciliation Report (TRC) mentions factors that had occasioned instability and will always do if not avoided in Sierra Leone, some of which are electoral fraud and lack of public trust in institutions that are the representations of the people. Recently, it has become a common practice in governance for institutions and people who are representation of the public to embark on activities that have been condemned by the TRC Report, and those activities have the proclivity to undermine the peace and tranquility in Sierra Leone Politics without principles is like worship without sacrifice, the guiding principles of our democracy have been adversely undermined and replaced with the despotic ones that enforce the by all means force for political power that is married to the one party system of political agony, which benefits the incumbent and disadvantages the oppositions. This, in the Twenty First century, can best be described as state capture.
The Sierra Leone we love must seen existing in the Legislature, Judiciary and Executive, if so, it can bear reflective results on the front desk of our economy and the livelihood of all inhabitants in Sierra Leone. The Economy of Sierra Leone has been paralyzed, as compared to the broken economy, which many party-political fanatics are banking on for the government’s failure, as an excuse of not turning the economy around. The GDP is exposing our political ineptitude, whilst the inflation is conducting funeral service for the country’s currency, as if giving life and strengthening our currency are inevitable.
Unemployment has sunk down and hard to remove like the sinking Titanic Ship. There is an artificial made mystery of corruption in this government, and to sense its existence, one does not need a spiritual spectacle to see it. As evidence reveal in the Auditor General’s Report, the quantum of misappropriation is a recipe for economic recession. The fight against corruption is a Xerox, merely turning into figment and deceiving tax payers.
