Sports Drive President Bio’s “Big Five” Game-Changer Initiative

On October 1, 2024, officials from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Ministry of Sport, National Sports Authority, Sierra Leone Football Association, and the Premier League Board provided an update on the state of sports in Sierra Leone at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Freetown.

Minister of Sport, Mrs. Augusta James Tiema, emphasized the transformative power of sports in fostering community connections, improving public health, and creating opportunities for youth development. She praised President Bio’s leadership for prioritizing the revitalization of the sports sector.

In discussing infrastructure, she outlined the government’s strategic plan to collaborate with the Ministry of Lands to develop more sports facilities, such as the Bo Stadium, aimed at hosting international competitions to elevate Sierra Leone’s global sports profile. The Minister also expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the Chinese government in improving sports infrastructure.

Minister Tiema highlighted the diverse sports scene in Sierra Leone, including volleyball, gymnastics, and tennis, stressing the government’s commitment to promoting a broad sporting culture. This expansion is intended to create job opportunities for youths by requiring not only athletes, but also coaches, administrators, and support staff.

Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, discussed the government’s financial investments in the sports sector, aiming to enhance Sierra Leone’s international competitiveness. He announced plans for capacity building, which include training athletes and coaches to improve performance standards across all sports.

One significant initiative mentioned was the reintroduction of traditional sports in preparation for the 2025 Olympic Games, aimed at preserving Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage while attracting international attention. Saffa also noted the economic potential of a thriving sports industry, from increased tourism to job creation, and highlighted financial support provided to the Leone Stars, Sierra Leone’s national football team.

Sierra Leone Football Association President, Thomas Daddy Brima, emphasized football’s role in promoting national unity and peace. He noted the increase in competitive events like the FA Cup, which has contributed to raising standards in the sport.

Brima proudly highlighted the success of the U17 and U20 football teams under his leadership, particularly the U20 team’s qualification during his tenure. He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting football throughout the country.

Mr. Victor Lewis commended the Sierra Leone Premier League for its recent milestones, including broadcasting matches on AYV Television via DSTV. This development has significantly increased the league’s visibility both within Sierra Leone and across Africa, enhancing fan engagement and showcasing the success of Sierra Leonean players in international competitions.
