Since his appointment as Chief Immigration Officer (CIO) of Sierra Leone in August 2023, Honorable Alusine Kanneh has introduced transformative changes to the Immigration Department, demonstrating dynamic leadership and a vision for modernization. A former deputy parliamentary whip and chairman of the Internal Affairs Committee, Hon. Kanneh’s governance experience has played a pivotal role in his success as chief immigration officer (CIO).
His Achievements Includes
Decentralization of Passport Processing
One of Hon. Kanneh’s most impactful reforms has been the decentralization of passport processing. Previously, Sierra Leoneans across the country were required to travel to the capital, Freetown, for passport services, a process that was not only time-consuming but also costly. Under Kanneh’s leadership, the Immigration Department established regional passport processing centers in Kenema, Bo, and Bombali by November 2024. This initiative significantly reduced logistical burdens for citizens and made essential services more accessible, particularly for those in rural areas. Additionally, plans have been set in motion to extend passport processing to Sierra Leonean embassies in London and Washington, D.C. This expansion, expected to launch in early 2025, will provide vital services to citizens abroad.
Modernizing Immigration Services
Hon. Kanneh has spearheaded efforts to modernize the Immigration Department, ensuring efficient service delivery. By leveraging technology and streamlining processes, the department has positioned itself to meet the growing demands of Sierra Leone’s citizens and diaspora.
Introduction of New Uniforms
To bolster morale and professionalism within the department, Hon. Kanneh introduced new security uniforms for immigration officers in November 2024. This move not only improves the department’s image but also reflects a commitment to enhancing operational standards and staff pride. The new uniforms symbolize a revitalized and organized workforce ready to serve the nation effectively.
Strategic Vision for Future Growth
Beyond immediate reforms, Hon. Kanneh has outlined a comprehensive vision for the department’s future. His focus includes expanding service coverage, improving border security, and ensuring the Immigration Department is equipped to handle modern challenges such as increasing international mobility and evolving security threats.
Impact on Citizens
Citizens across Sierra Leone have praised the decentralization of services and the department’s improved efficiency. By eliminating the need for long-distance travel to access essential services, Hon. Kanneh has made the Immigration Department more citizen-focused. His reforms are widely viewed as steps toward achieving a more inclusive and efficient public service.
Hon. Alusine Kanneh has proven to be an effective leader, transforming Sierra Leone’s Immigration Department into a modern and service-oriented institution. From decentralizing passport processing to introducing new uniforms and planning for future growth, his contributions have significantly improved accessibility and operational standards. His leadership serves as a model of how dedicated governance can positively impact national institutions and citizens alike.
