In Sierra Leone, the pervasive influence of religion and traditional cultural norms shapes societal attitudes, resulting in significant stigma and severe consequences for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. Within this context, practising any form of LGBTQ+ expression is not only condemned but regarded as both a sin and a taboo. This negative perception is deeply rooted in the beliefs of the community, where many view homosexuality as abhorrent and contrary to the teachings of religious doctrines and ancestral customs. The elders, who hold considerable authority and sway within the community, have established stringent norms that govern behaviour, declaring that anyone identified as engaging in LGBTQ+ practices will face harsh repercussions. These can include severe physical punishment, torture, and even the ultimate punishment of death.
A recent incident on the 24th July, in the city of Freetown at a community named Orogu in the eastern part revelation came to light when an elderly woman from the neighbourhood reported the incident to the community’s elders. Taking immediate and extreme action, the elders convened and organised a mob with the intent of confronting Aminata. However, Aminata was fortunate to escape capture, evading the mob’s pursuit. In their rage and frenzy, the mob group nonetheless targeted her home, resulting in a violent attack that left her sister as the unfortunate victim. The mob group accused her sister of complicity in Aminata’s supposed immoral behaviour, proceeding to beat her severely and inflict significant suffering upon her as punishment for alleged knowledge of her sister’s relationship.
Despite numerous attempts by the media to make contact with Aminata to gather her side of the story and understand her current situation, all efforts have proven futile. The climate of fear surrounding the incident has left Aminata’s family deeply concerned for her safety and overall well-being. They are left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty regarding her whereabouts, as no one in the community seems to have information on her current state. Equally alarming is the disappearance of Aminata’s partner, who also seems to have vanished without a trace, leaving both families in a state of distress and confusion. This incident underscores the perilous circumstances faced by individuals who dare to live authentically in a society that is largely unaccepting, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and advocacy for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in Sierra Leone and similar contexts around the world.
As LGBTQ+ individuals are traditionally banned from practising in Sierra Leone, Aminata has become a victim of stigmatisation, harassment, and provocation, making her a target for those seeking to silence her and others who identify as LGBTQ+. Many individuals have been extra-judicially killed, with no trace of their bodies left for proper burial due to their sexual orientation. As we continue our investigation, we will keep the public updated on our efforts to reach Aminata. The village elders are also actively searching for her, as they intend to kill her if she is found.
