In democratic societies, there are moments when the ethical responsibilities of moral guarantors and political leaders are called into question, particularly in how they safeguard the fundamental human rights of all individuals. Recently, Sierra Leone has found itself in the throes of a severe political crisis, which has prompted us to investigate a troubling case of human rights abuses that has resulted in individuals fleeing their homes to escape persecution.

One particularly poignant example is the case of a woman named Evelyn Kanu, who is well-known in her community for her identification as a lesbian and her involvement in the LGBTQ+ community. On the 28th of October, an incident occurred that would dramatically alter the course of her life: Evelyn was caught engaging in a romantic relationship with her same-sex partner. This revelation sent shockwaves through the local community, leading to widespread outrage and prompting residents to report the matter to the elders, demanding immediate action.

The response from the community’s leaders encompassing religious, traditional, and political figures, was predictable but no less disheartening. Such relationships are viewed as taboo within their cultural context, clashing with longstanding religious and traditional beliefs that impose strict moral codes. The fallout from these beliefs often manifests in violent forms, as society stigmatizes those who deviate from accepted norms. It is not uncommon in such situations for individuals who are discovered engaging in same-sex relationships to face dire consequences, ranging from brutal violence to the risk of death.

In Evelyn’s case, a group of elders and local men quickly mobilized to hunt her down, intent on meting out their version of “justice.” Realizing the imminent danger she faced, Evelyn displayed remarkable courage and resourcefulness, successfully evading what many would see as an impending mob attack. As of now, she is untraceable, having gone underground in an effort to escape the violent retribution that her community sought to impose on her and her partner. Unfortunately, information gathered indicates that she had already left the Shores of Sierra Leone when the news broke about her lesbian practices. Many are saying that she knew before leaving, but on the other hand, it was after she left.

Attempts by our media outlet to locate and reach out to Evelyn have unfortunately proven futile, underscoring the precarious position that those in her situation often find themselves in. It is heartbreaking to note that despite her trials, Evelyn is also a mother of two children from a relationship with a man, complicating her identity even further within a society that often fails to acknowledge the full spectrum of human experience. The plight of Evelyn Kanu serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights, particularly for marginalized communities, and highlights the urgent need for systemic change in how societies approach issues of sexual orientation and personal freedom.
