In recent times, Sierra Leone has experienced a troubling increase in tensions and conflicts surrounding the issue of secret societies and the obligations they impose on community members. A particularly alarming development has been the violent clashes between residents who are strongly opposed to joining these secret societies and the elders or leaders within the community who are actively pushing for their members to participate. The elders, often regarded as the custodians of traditional authority, are reportedly exerting considerable pressure on individuals to conform, sometimes resorting to extreme measures. Citizens who refuse to comply with such demands face severe consequences, including threats to their personal safety and life. There are reports of individuals being subjected to mob justice, vigilante acts driven by fear, anger, or coercion leading to injuries or even deaths among those who resist society membership.
A recent and particularly tragic incident took place on September 22, 2022, in Mafari Village, located within Kambia District. This event centered around a young man named Musa Sorie Dumbuya, whose story has become emblematic of the ongoing struggles and dangers associated with secret society practices in the region. Musa, reportedly a devout person with strong religious convictions, explicitly refused to join the secret society, citing his religious beliefs that condemn such groups as being contrary to his faith. He openly considered secret societies to be evil and illegitimate, especially citing the numerous young people in his village who had either died attempting to join these groups or experienced mental and physical health problems afterward, transforming into what villagers described as “becoming abnormal” or losing their sense of normalcy.
Despite Musa’s firm stance and objections, pressure from elders and society youth groups escalated. The secret society members, including their leaders, allegedly forced Musa to participate, threatening his life to ensure compliance. In a subsequent act of arson, the society’s bush an important site used for initiation rites and secret gatherings was set ablaze. The elders and community leaders quickly accused Musa of torching the bush in retaliation or as an act of defiance. In response, a mob was organized, consisting of society youth members and village elders, who aggressively pursued Musa in an attempt to punish or kill him summarily. Musa, showing courage and resistance, managed to evade capture initially, fleeing the scene to avoid the violent wrath of the mob.
However, the story took a darker turn when, shortly afterward, Musa’s abducted son was reportedly taken by the same group of elders and youth allegedly in retaliation or as a form of punitive action against Musa. The community’s fears and tensions deepened, and Musa’s whereabouts have since become unknown, with no confirmed sightings. There have been ongoing efforts by some community members and concerned relatives to locate him and ensure his safety, but thus far, these endeavors have proved unsuccessful. The case has attracted widespread attention, highlighting the dangerous extent to which traditional authority figures and secret societies can resort to violence and intimidation to enforce social conformity, with devastating consequences for individuals who dare to oppose them.
Effort to reach out to Musa by this media to ascertain his whereabouts and get his own sides have proven futile. Investigation continues.
