While issues surrounding homosexuality are increasingly being brought to the forefront of national discourse in Sierra Leone, recent developments have brought this sensitive topic into sharper focus, revealing complex social and political dynamics. Reports have surfaced indicating that Dauda Franklyn Kargbo, a prominent human rights and civil liberties advocate known for his unwavering commitment to democracy and social justice, has been implicated in practicing and promoting a same-sex relationship. Kargbo, who was residing at 79 Komrabai Durah Road, Kambia, a man who actually hails from Kambia district, is the Executive Director of the Citizen Awareness Forum, an organization dedicated to defending citizens’ rights, holding government authorities accountable for human rights abuses, and raising awareness about democratic principles across Sierra Leone.
According to reliable sources, Kargbo’s alleged involvement in a same-sex relationship revolves around a casual relationship with a young man named Mike Johnson who is said to be of American descent. The information suggests that this relationship had been conducted discreetly until recent rumors began circulating within certain social circles, which eventually drew the attention of law enforcement and traditional authorities. The Sierra Leone police, upon receiving these reports, declared Franklyn Kargbo wanted for allegedly engaging in acts considered illegal under current national laws and societal norms.
This development has ignited a fierce public debate, with many viewing Kargbo as a courageous defender of democratic rights and others condemning him based on the cultural and religious standards prevalent in Sierra Leone. The controversy escalated on the night of the 4th April 2022, when traditional and religious leaders reportedly mobilized a mob (youth) with the apparent intention of apprehending Kargbo with his partner in crime, and carrying out what they termed “mob justice,” aiming to punish them swiftly without due process. It is believed that the crowd, driven by moral outrage and societal pressures, attempted to locate and capture both men with the intent to punish them on the spot. According to eyewitness accounts, Kargbo and Mike managed to escape the hostile mob.
Tragically, subsequent reports indicate that, after his escape, Kargbo was subjected to unlawful violence and was reportedly killed under suspicious circumstances. Family members and close associates have expressed confusion and distress over his sudden disappearance and unconfirmed death, as no official confirmation has been provided by authorities or medical institutions. They are unable to verify his current whereabouts or the cause of his death, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding Kargbo’s predicament highlight the ongoing tensions in Sierra Leone concerning issues of human rights, personal freedoms, and the pervasive influence of traditional and religious values on legal and social norms. While some view Kargbo as a defender of liberty and a voice for marginalized groups, others see his actions as violations of societal morals rooted in cultural and religious teachings. The situation remains delicate and complex, with heightened concerns over human rights violations, unlawful acts of violence, and the treatment of individuals accused of practicing or advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Sierra Leone.
As investigations continue, the Sierra Leonean public and international observers are closely monitoring the case to ensure justice is served and that human rights are respected. The tragic fate of Dauda Franklyn Kargbo underscores the urgent need for national dialogue on issues of personal freedom, legal reform, and the protection of civil liberties, amid an evolving society grappling with traditions, modern values, and human rights considerations.
